On a daily basis there are news reports and blog posts about issues linked with motorcycle crash helmets. Accidents resulting in fatalities often involve riders who were not wearing adequate helmets or any helmet at all.
Helmet ordinances around the world vary, but currently in the United States, there are only 3 states that do not by law require motorcyclists to wear helmets. Of the remaining states, 20 mandate wearing head gear for all riders and 27 require riders under a specific age, either 21 or 18, to wear helmets whenever they ride.
It's probably not the case that the majority of riders would dispute the notion that wearing a helmet does offer a greater degree of protection than not wearing a helmet. But many riders dislike having their heads enclosed and so in some cases opt for inadequate, cheap helmets that are smaller, are looser and, though they might look good, do not provide enough safety.
If you are a rider who does not like helmets, you should know that cheap motorcycle helmets don't have to be poor quality helmets. Read reviews and do some research before buying.
You should also know that one of the most important aspects of deciding upon the correct helmet is how it fits. For this reason, either try before you purchase or make sure the helmet you purchase comes with an adequate exchange and return policy.
The helmet should fit snug without being too tight or having places that are particular points of pressure. A helmet that fits correctly is snug enough not to move if you jiggle your head around. With the chin strap on, it stays put.
Don't get a used or no-name brand of helmet. Get something that has been thoroughly put to the test. You might consider models from KBC, HJC or Arai. A Shoei motorcycle helmet is also an extremely good brand choice.
